HA3 Task 1 Structure – The Value Chain

The Main Sectors of the Industry:

Developers:

A software developer that specializes in the development of video games.

Publishers:

Publishers are the people responsible for publishing a game and making sure it sells and make sure it gets to shelves. Some examples of publishers are companies like Rockstar who publisher Grand Theft Auto V, and Activision who published the Call of Duty series, which is one of the most popular game franchise's of all time.



Console Manufacturers/First Party Publishers

Console Manufacturers are responsible for creating the console that a game uses to play on, such as Microsoft who develop Xbox, Sony who created the PlayStation and Nintendo who created the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS,  The First Party Publishers publish the games onto those consoles. First Party Publisher can also support developers and publishers working on their particular platforms.



Distribution and Retail:

In the video game industrydigital distribution is the process of delivering video game content as digital information, without the exchange or purchase of new physical media.To facilitate the sale of games, various game companies have created their own platforms for digital distribution. These platforms, such as Steam (software)Origin, PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace, provide centralized services to purchase and download digital content for either specific video game consoles or PCs. Some platforms may also serve as digital rights management systems, limiting the use of purchased items to one account.

Retail is the process of selling consumer goods and/or services to customers through multiple channels of distribution to earn a profit. Demand is created through diverse target markets and promotional tactics, satisfying consumers' wants and needs through a lean supply chain. In terms of gaming, games are shipped to retailers which are then sold to the public for profit.

Outsourcing Companies:

In businessoutsourcing involves the contracting out of a business process to another party. This provides many services to developers and publishers needed to create games, for example; rendering, animation, art and design, physics engines, graphics and programming and also audio and sound design. 

Press and Media:

Press and Media is responsible for providing journalistic output, reviewing games and analysis for the customer and trade. This can include magazines, television, websites and blogs. Reviews can also affect the success and failure of a game. Bad reviews can cause a game to fail but good reviews can make the game alot more successful.
